ALL THAT SPARKLES When we think of things in life that sparkle we often think of precious gemstones such as diamonds and emeralds. Gemology has become a science that people study for years. There are various certificates and recognitions in the jewelry industry. People are willing to spend millions per year on wearing a luxury items that sparkle and shine to symbolize their place in the society. There is an engagement ring, an anniversary band and most recently a right hand ring for women. Don’t forget about the Bling, Bling that all the superstars are wearing! When I think of things in life that sparkle, I think of people that bring goodness to the world. Just like the precious stones, each nationality has the nearly perfect subjects created by nature. So why are these people not getting any recognition for being so sparkly? Why is our society not willing to pay millions of dollars to help their cause? It seems very unfair that often those who live in poverty and oppression are the real gems of the world. The few lucky individuals manage to get into the public eye, but most are unseen and unheard. Like the diamonds hidden underground, they can not stand out until they are pulled out of the dirt – their actions are priceless, but it may be years before someone notices them. These are everyday people disguised as the guy or girl next door. It’s the immigrant grandparents who sacrifice everything to raise her grandkids. It’s the little girl who says a prayer each night for her family. It’s the brave young man, who has not seen life but has seen war. It’s the factory worker who works two shifts to feed his family. It’s the rich business man who uses his power and prestige to pull strings to help the poor. It’s the father who sacrifices his status in society to become a dedicated stay home dad. It’s the mother who raises her kids and gives up her career. The list is countless! The question remains why does our society not value sacrifice, dedication, kindness? Perhaps if each one of us called someone today and pointed out why this person shines in their life, we can all have a day of peace. Dedication: This article is dedicated to my friends who are my everyday gems. Without them this world would be a harsh, sad place. I am glad that my friends are as different as the diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires all created to be a different shapes, colors and religions. You guys make the world beautiful! You are priceless! Milena Livits, Chicago |
